the state of being constantly attentive and responsive to signs of opportunity, activity, or danger

The popularity and usage of social media over the years have increased. Due to this increase, there has now been an influx of information shared on a global platform. This information that has been shared can be as superficial as daily activities, food eaten, or as sensitive as graphic crimes committed. The Perceived Social Media Anonymity Effect is a concept that I am introducing and seeking to explore. It is based on the premise that allows one to relinquish the fear of being in large crowds and speaking up when crimes have been committed while also being able to seek solitude among numbers on a social media platform where it appears easier to report and inform. This concept stems from the Bystander Effect. Darley & Latane (1968) states that the Bystander Effect refers to the phenomenon surrounding the passivity of onlookers’ willingness to help or intervene when faced with critical situations where others are being harmed. This study reviewed literature and high-profile social media exposure cases and analyzed the following questions: To what extent is there a nexus between the non-reporting of crimes and reporting on social media? Furthermore, what are the perceived factors an individual reports that they take into account when determining whether to post or share videos of crimes on social media platforms and/or not report to the police? To explore these issues, the public cases of Eric Garner, Laquan McDonald, and Kenneka Jenkins were used to determine the impact of social media and its usage in a way of spreading information to the general public and at times used as a catalyst for social change. Information from a range of sources including local and national newspaper articles, media interviews, Chicago Police Department, and the New York Police Department are synthesized and analyzed. This study concludes by reviewing the implications and findings and recommendations for future studies.

The huge success of the internet and information technology has a remarkable effect on both public and private sectors within a country. Internet services and applications have drastically increased. That's why people find it more convenient to use internet applications to give an online complaint regarding any suspicious activity rather than visiting a police station. This method is reasonably secure since it is possible to hide the identity of the person who reported the complaint about the crime. Many cases are not registered in the police station since the person complained wants to hide the identity due to the possible risk or danger. It is also feared that there are many pending investigations due to a lack of proper shreds of evidence from the reporting people. An online application can bridge this communication gap between police and individuals to send reports or other required information. This paper proposes an application that can be used by individuals to report and manage their complaints effectively. Further, the system can be used by people to register complaints and is helpful to the police department in identifying criminals. The main purpose of the application is to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of interaction procedures between police officials and common people. It would be an outstanding tool to monitor and track criminals around the country and also have a complete online record of crime-related information.
